Experimentation.
Upon purchasing my first Digital DSLR. I immediately began to experiment with the different settings on the camera. I usually adjusted a setting to it’s extreme, and slowly worked my way back to a neutral state. It helped me understand what each components function was and how it reacted to manual adjustment.
I was working on shooting with low light and micro focusing. I vaguely remember seeing a similar image like this in a magazine, so I tried replicating it.
Shutter speed allowed me to get a little more creative. I’ll spare you my over indulgence, and just share my favorite shots.
I got this idea from film photographers. Double Exposing is loads of fun. I really want to figure out how to have both subjects completely sold, not ghost like.
Portrait photography is one of my favorite styles. Candid or spontaneous, it’s one of the few times you can really digest every visual detail of another individual without being creepy. For whatever reason, I really enjoy seeing the nuances of a persons face. Pores, wrinkles, blemishes, scars….
The next time you look in the mirror, just don’t scan for pimples or hair. Really take close look at how your eyes are shaped, how your nose sets, how your jawline looks, and the texture of your skin. If your anything like me, the longer you look the more you’ll realize how different you appear over the self visualization you carry your mind.

Something else I really need to work on is framing. It’s easy to become distracted while shooting, only to realize later that you cut their damn hand off.
Years ago, I few friends and I made up a game titled “Ugly face”. Here’s how you play…..
You can do it two ways.
1. Use hard alcohol, preferably the cheap shit. Take the photo immediately after a shot it taken. Whoever has worse post-shot face looses, and takes another one.
2. The alternative, and the most enjoyable way. Everyone stands back to back. Contort your face so much, that it makes Jim Carry proud. Take a selfie, whoever has the most grotesque or funny face wins, and is spared. The losers take a drink.
Fun and games aside, it was after this night in the early the morning that I boarded a flight to head back into Iraq. Before I post those photos. I want to display a brief example of the training required prior to deploying overseas. Shall we……
